A universe of your own where imagination knows no bounds – isn’t that the dream of every little boy who loves all things space? My son had been asking me for a space-themed bedroom for over a year. I finally got to work and turned his bedroom into a captivating space-themed sanctuary. And I couldn’t be happier with the results.
I had SO much fun decorating this room. It was honestly a no-stress DIY project, mostly because I kept it very straightforward and easy. I thought about adding details like wallpaper, painting a mural, or creating an accent wall. But I do see myself possibly changing his room over to another one in the future. So I decided to keep the walls simple to allow for any changes to be easily accommodated. With an overall minimalist approach, a limited budget, and carefully selected elements, I tried to create a celestial haven that sparks curiosity and celebrates my son’s love for space exploration.
The best part? I designed personalized prints for my son too!
Let’s take a little room tour and talk about some essential elements that make up a space room.
1. Canopy Loft Bed: Camp under the Stars
Imagine drifting off to sleep under a canopy that evokes the feeling of camping under a starry sky.

When I first got this loft bed, a space-themed kid’s bedroom was not on my mind at all. However, now this loft bed just feels perfect for it. The cozy canopy creates a sense of being out in nature, camping under the sky. It’s the perfect blend of comfort and play.

My son doesn’t need a bed bunk in this room. However, it’s good for sleepovers and the occasional bedroom sharing with siblings. Also, the more you can utilize vertical space in a small room, the better. The bed frame is VERY strong and sturdy. I have climbed the ladder myself and the rungs haven’t broken lol! It’s a well-made bed that doesn’t get chipped easily. However, I do see some wear and tear on the “paint” of the bed frame. It can come off in some spots, especially on the ladder and the white spots that appear from underneath are kind of obvious. If that bothers you, then perhaps look into a different bed.
The Canopy

To create a canopy, I just used a spare 98″ curtain that I happened to have on hand. I do think a longer curtain (108″) would have fit better as it would hang longer on both sides of the bed. but surprisingly this one stays put for the most part. If you do this and use a curtain, make sure the curtain’s fabric is not slippery. I haven’t secured it with anything but I’m thinking about tying it to the bed frame as it can come off if the kids do any rough play. I have linked some multipurpose canvas tarps for you that would make for the perfect canopy on a bed like this.
Wall Colour
The paint on the walls is the color Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams. It’s a really beautiful blue.
2. Space Bedding & Cushions

If you follow me on Instagram, then you know that I went to IKEA to buy their cute solar system rug. But during the same trip, I couldn’t help but pick up this duvet cover and pillow set adorned with planets and spacecraft. It is beyond cute! I love how it was the perfect way to brighten up the black frame of the loft bed. If I didn’t get this, I was either going to go for plain blue or plain white bedding. Thankfully I found this because it just makes the whole room so playful!

Decorative Cushions & Pillows
I didn’t add too many decorative pillows because I knew they’d just end up on the floor. This sleep time dua pillow is just perfect and all that was needed here. Not only can it be personalized with a child’s name, it also teaches your child the dua to read before sleep. It comes in three different color schemes – Blue & Gold, Pink and Grey, and Black & Gold. It makes for a wonderful gift too! I mean, which child doesn’t love a pillow with their name on it?
3. A Space Study Station

I wanted to make sure I had a desk and chair in the room. A comfortable spot for homework and study is important. So I swapped the dresser that was here with a good old IKEA desk that was sitting at my parents’ house for ages. Thankfully his closet is more than enough for his clothes so a dresser wasn’t really needed. As for the chair, I picked it up from the “As is” section at IKEA. It’s great quality and spacious with wheels at the bottom as well. Right now I have carpet but it will be helpful for when we upgrade to wood flooring.

I also added this super inexpensive lamp from IKEA. I thought it kind of had a futuristic space vibe! What do you think? The other knick knacks on this desk (Globe + Rocket) are from HomeSense Canada.
4. Personalized Space-Themed Wall Art

There’s something special about personalized home decor and I couldn’t be happier with how these Space-themed wall art prints look in my son’s room! The best part is – I designed them myself and ensured that they were not only playful but also meaningful.
I feel like wall art can serve as a subtle way to convey subconscious messaging. I did look into buying space art from various sources and while I found some beautiful pieces, they didn’t quite fit the vision I had for this space. I wanted to have that cultural element that’s often missing in the generic art you might find at a local home goods store.
Through the big and bold name print, I hope I can give Yusuf a strong sense of identity and teach him to always be proud of his name. Through the other prints, I sprinkled in some education, some motivation, and Ayat-ul-Kursi for learning and protection.

I created two color schemes – one that is a black & blue theme and a lighter one that has a white background and is more colorful. I couldn’t decide which color scheme to go with because they both looked so great on the light blue walls. In the end, I went ahead with the Dark theme because of the contrast it provides.
I am so happy about this entire set! Check out the entire collection and both color schemes. Let me know in the comments below which one you like better!

5. Space Organization: Wall Shelves, Hooks & Baskets

WallShelf – From HomeSense

Transform a simple wall shelf into a display of their treasures and books. We keep all the books in our family room, so you won’t see books here. My son loves all his figurines and even though he doesn’t play with them so much anymore, he is proud of his little collection. The figurines used to be all over the floors and in baskets. He would ask me to look for them all the time when they got lost. Now that he has a little dedicated spot for them, I’m hoping that my days of looking under couches and beds for Superheros are over. With his space obsession right now, he likes the Star Wars ones the most so I kept them down lower in easy reach. Loving this designated space for organizing and showcasing toys.
This metal wall shelf is extremely sturdy. I like that some of the shelves also have a lip so things don’t fall off that easily.
Moon Phase Wall Hanging

The moon phase wall hanging was a score from the clearance section of HomeSense for just $5! The only issue I found with it was that it was a bit creased. Well, looks perfect to me!
Wall Hooks

I also took advantage of the space right underneath the shelf to add some hooks on the wall that are easy for my son to reach. He’s always throwing his clothes around on the floor, especially the ones that can be re-worn such as pyjamas. These hooks provide a quick and easy solution for that and are also perfect for hanging up his drawstring bag for swimming clothes. Now, they look adorable but I am honestly not impressed by their quality. When I bought them, I noticed the product had no reviews. But I thought, hey – maybe it’s a new product and I should give the business a chance. Bad decision. The screws just did not work the way they should have so the planets are protruding out of the wall a little more than they should. I wouldn’t be surprised if they fall out one by one. For now, I’m just keeping them but I see myself replacing them in the future. I have linked them for you if you are curious but I wouldn’t recommend them based on my own experience.

One big basket from HomeSense solved the problem of storing all the other toys in place. My son did grab the three toys from IKEA – these are the 3 things that I think I could have done without in this room lol! He has enough toys already but of course he really wanted more. I told him he could get the space ones to add to his room.
6. Space Lights: Illuminate the Sky

What is a space room without some otherworldly ambiance? I added a few lights – an Astronaut projector, neon space lights and a planets garland. There is no denying that the lights captivate the senses.

Astronaut Galaxy Light Projector:
US Link 🇺🇸 | Canada Link 🇨🇦
All the heavy-duty light projection is being done by this little astronaut. I love the changing colors and the bright green stars. The light is much stronger than those of some other projectors I’ve had. It doesn’t necessarily fill the whole room as it just projects onto the wall at which it’s directed. Depending on how close or far away that is, the light will be more or less strong. In any case, it creates a wow factor that cannot be ignored.

Planets String Lights:

Shop Ceiling Light:

I literally grabbed the simplest looking ceiling light from IKEA. It’s LED and a bit more yellow than I’d like in the daytime. However, it does give off a moon-like affect so I’m making peace with it. Plus, cannot go wrong with its price!

Shop Neon Space Lights:
US Link 🇺🇸 | Canada Link 🇨🇦
These neon lights are amazing. So bright! They can be operated by batteries or via USB plugs. They do come with clear hooks however, one of mine fell off the wall in a couple of days. I ended up just using push pins to secure these in place and they work perfectly!

Shop Extension Cord:
US Link 🇺🇸 | Canada Link 🇨🇦
I keep all the electronics plugged into this extension cord. It’s so great because it has 3 USB slots, 6 outlets, a long wire, and an on and off switch. This gives me the peace of mind that my son (or little daughter) won’t be fidgeting with wall outlets every time they want to turn the lights on and off. The one-touch switch is perfect for that.
This space-themed bedroom turned out so much better than I had imagined. With elements like a canopy loft bed, personalized wall art, space bedding, and imaginative toys, you can create a celestial retreat that sparks imagination and inspires endless adventures among the stars.
