The weather here in Toronto has been unusually warm for the end of September… with heat warnings and all! If you follow me on Instagram, then you know that I even headed to the beach last weekend. But we Canadians know better than to complain about that because it’s going to be -20 degrees before we can say ‘winter’! Point in case – even though the weather has been warm, it hasn’t kept me from getting excited about the beauty of fall.
So today, I’ve teamed up with seven amazing bloggers to do an Autumn Home Tour! Get ready to do some blog-hopping and take a tour with me through everyone’s homes. After you’ve read my post, be sure to check out Sarah’s blogpost @ Dreaming of Homemaking to see how she’s styled her beautiful bedroom this fall. It’s super cozy!! And then continue to follow the tour along through her page.
As some of you guys would know from Instagram, I’m not really big on changing up all my décor each season. I try to keep things simple and make neutral & all-season décor choices in the first place. However, one thing I do find myself styling differently from season to season is the fireplace in our living room. We spend a lot of time in this room as it is currently our main sitting area (with the family room being renovated right now by yours truly). So this fireplace really is the heart of our home. It’s the first thing you see when you walk into our living room, and it shines bright with sunlight pouring in from the windows all around. So I take full advantage of the fact that it already seeks attention and just dress it up a little bit :)
I’m sharing a picture of what my mantel normally looks like, so you can compare it to how I’ve styled it for fall. Sorry, the “before” picture wasn’t taken from the same angle, or even during the same season/light, but you’ll get the idea:
This look was super easy to create! As much as possible, I wanted to use items that I already owned. The only things I specifically bought are: two candles, the faux flower vase, and the cute little fabric pumpkins. The burnt orange cushions are from my mom’s living room. She no longer plans to use them as she’s changing up her living room. So I went and grabbed them ASAP! I have written out a source list towards the end of this post for each item in the picture above for anyone interested.
Whenever I change my interiors, especially with the intention of creating a certain mood, I like to keep the five senses in mind. It’s a good guideline to help you achieve the vibes that you’re going for. Why don’t we see how and give you some tips along the way?
Sight – Create the look of Autumn
I love bringing in some bright and bold colours for fall (and spring) to this space. I find that they really add a beautiful contrast to my white and grey living room. My goal with this little corner was to keep the design looking modern, while bringing in pops of colour with simple and inexpensive items that represent fall. The reddish-orange flowers, the pumpkins and yellow-orange gradient candles all help with that look.
The most I do with pumpkins in the fall is that I drink Pumpkin Spice Latte :D I’ve never tried cooking with them or anything! So I went ahead and got two fabric pumpkins instead of buying real ones. And I’m loving these two cuties!
Smell – Light Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice
I think it’s no secret that a lovely fragrance can really affect your mood for the better and help you relax! What can I say about fall candles? They are just the best! Vanilla Pumpkin, Sweet Cinnamon, and Autumn Leaves are some of the easily available “flavours” that you can bring home this season. As soon as I opened the above candles from their packaging, the entire living room filled with their lovely smell right away. And everytime I walk by I have to take a deep breath in :D Can’t wait to actually light them one of these days!
Touch – Create Cozy Corners
I added a soft throw and a faux fur mat on the chairs to bring in that coziness factor. The ribbed ottoman also adds a lot of texture to the otherwise plain items. The fact that I don’t get to sit here and enjoy this coziness all that much is another story (#momlife). But I’m really gonna make an effort to!
Taste – Enjoy Seasonal Produce
Now I wish I had some baked apples, butternut squash or a pumpkin pie to set-up in my tray here. But I’m sure you can imagine how amazing it would be to eat those seasonal foods in a setting like this! Makes everything come together! Don’t mind my green tea with nuts (?)… I basically took a picture of whatever I could quickly find haha! But who am I kidding – I actually love this combo!
Sound – Listen to your favourite tunes
You can always put on some lovely music of your choice to add to the ambiance of the space. Or if you have a little kid, like I do, you will probably have some kind of background noise anyway. In my case, there’s mostly Peppa Pig or some other kind of YouTube kiddie song playing in the background. I have them all memorized by now.
So that’s all, folks! Hope I gave you some ideas on how to do something simple and playful if you’re looking to change up your interiors this season. Keeps it fun and interesting. It’s the little things, right?
Now head on over to my fellow bloggers’ websites to take the whole Autumn Fall Tour. The more inspiration, the better! These bloggers have decorated for fall with real pumpkins, leaves and apples! And one of them actually lives on a farm and has the cutest animals right in her backyard! How awesome is that?! :D Click on the banners below to be directed straight to their blogs :)
Until next time, ciao ciao! <3
